AIHA Hosts Tele Web on Hazard
Banding
AIHA will host the Tele Web Virtual
Seminar “Hazard Banding: A Risk Management Approach to Occupational Exposures” on Sept. 29, 2009, from 2 to
4: 30 p.m. ET.
Participants will explore the concepts
of hazard banding, a practical risk management approach using toxicological
data to perform a qualitative risk assessment and determine appropriate control
solutions. The foundation of this approach is the categorization or banding
of chemicals according to their toxicological characteristics, combined with
consideration for the conditions of use,
potential for exposure and implications
for controls. The Tele Web will review
the origins of this approach in the U.S.
pharmaceutical industry during the late
1980s and discuss efforts to apply hazard banding strategies worldwide.
For registration information on this
and other Tele Webs, visit www.aiha.org/
Tele Web or contact Cinthia Minan,
AIHA’s distance learning coordinator, at

AIHA Comments on Bill to Protect
Nurses, Health Care Workers
In a July 7 letter to Representative John
Conyers, Jr., AIHA expressed support for
the Nurse and Health Care Worker Pro-
tection Act of 2009 (HR 2381), which
would require OSHA to establish a safe
patient handling and injury prevention
standard. Conyers and Representative
Lynn Woolsey are cosponsoring the bill.
The letter from AIHA President Cathy
Cole noted that “The need to identify
and apply methods to improve safe pa-
tient handling programs has been recog-
nized since at least 1991. . . . Sadly, a
high percentage of health care facilities
have not yet decided to implement these
programs.”
Cole noted that AIHA’s position on
safe patient handling is in full agree-
ment with HR 2381, with two excep-
tions: AIHA recommends extending the
time allowed for sending safe patient
handling incident reports to OSHA from
one business day to 15 business days
and limiting the scope of the legislation
to workers in health care facilities.
“While we recognize . . . that home
health care workers are also exposed to
significant ergonomic risk, equipment
and other control approaches are not
currently available to adequately reduce
all of these exposures,” Cole wrote.
The Value of Volunteering
Hear—and see—attendees at AIHce 2009
in Toronto describe why they volunteer
for AIHA at http://vimeo.com/5415589.
