AIHA® Comments on Health-Care
Worker Bill
In January, AIHA sent comments to
Senator Al Franken regarding Senate Bill
1788, “Nurse and Health Care Worker
Protection Act of 2009.” This legislation
aims to enact safety and health standards
on safe patient handling and injury prevention and require health-care employers to use safe patient handling devices
and programs. AIHA previously extended
its support of HR 2381, the House version
of the bill, but felt compelled to make
additional comments regarding S 1788.
AIHA’s letter commends Sen. Franken
on his efforts to advance S 1788 and
suggests enhancements to the bill. The
AIHA position statement “Safe Handling
of Patients and Residents” is mostly in
agreement with the bill, but AIHA believes that the scope of the legislation
should be limited to workers in health-care facilities and not applied to in-home health-care employees.

Mission NAOSH 2010: Safe Work-
places
Once again, AIHA® will support the North
American Occupational Safety and Health
(NAOSH) Week, May 2– 8, 2010, which includes Occupational Safety and Health
Professional Day on May 5, 2010. The
goal of NAOSH week is to help demonstrate the importance and long-term benefits of workplace safety and health.
As the theme “Mission NAOSH 2010:
Safe Workplaces” suggests, this year’s
event will highlight pioneering efforts in
worker health and safety for businesses,
workers and communities.
NAOSH Week occurs every year during
the first full week of May and is intended
to raise awareness about occupational
safety, health and the environment and
the OEHS profession. Through its alliance
with OSHA, AIHA is a partner in NAOSH
Week. The American Society of Safety
Engineers (ASSE) and the Canadian
Society of Safety Engineers (CSSE) are
also sponsors.
AIHA® Comments on Draft Language
for HR 2847
In January, AIHA wrote to U.S. Senator
Richard Durbin regarding HR 2847, a bill
that would create jobs using money from
economic stimulus funding. The letter
recommends inserting language into the
