AIHA® and ACGIH® Continue Alliance Discussions
On May 19, AIHA and the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) announced that they would
continue dialogue regarding the May 2009 proposed strategic
alliance to develop occupational exposure guidelines. In the
originally proposed alliance, AIHA would be an industrial hygiene member professional organization while ACGIH would be
a non-member scientific organization. This would boost AIHA’s
efforts and resources to protect worker health and ensure that
all professionals have the opportunity to engage in supporting
and developing IH science and practice.
Late last year, ACGIH introduced an alternative alliance approach in which it receives funding from several professional
occupational health and safety associations whose members
have an interest and stake in the development and application
of occupational exposure guidelines. Within the past few months,
AIHA and other key professional associations participated in
ACGIH’s direct discussions to gauge interest.

Thornton Nominated for Reappointment to MACOSH
James R. Thornton, CIH, CSP, has been nominated for reappointment to the Maritime Advisory Committee for Occupational
Safety and Health (MACOSH). Thornton has served as chairman
of MACOSH and is part of the committee’s Professional-Government Interests section. He is also a past president of
AIHA® and the Academy of Industrial Hygiene.
Thornton managed Northrop Grumman Newport News for
more than 30 years, where he worked closely with several
unions. He served on the blue ribbon panel that evaluates
health and safety programs in the branches of services within
the Department of Defense and was awarded the OSHA IMPACT
Award for his service on the predecessor of MACOSH.
In a letter to Dorothy Dougherty, director of OSHA’s Direc-
torate of Standards and Guidance, AIHA Past President Cathy
Cole stated, “Mr. Thornton is highly qualified to participate on
MACOSH by virtue of his experience, knowledge and expertise
in the Maritime industry. AIHA is pleased to support the nomi-
nation of Mr. Thornton, and he has committed to avail MACOSH
with the necessary time to this important effort.”

AIHA® Member Nominated to California Occupational
Safety and Health Standards Board
Joel Cohen, CIH, has been nominated to the health position on
the California Occupational Safety and Health Standards Board
(OSHSB). The OSHSB is a seven-member body that sets standards
within the Cal/OSHA agency. All members are appointed by the
governor of California.
In an April letter to Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, AIHA
Past President Cathy Cole offered the association’s support for
Cohen’s appointment. “The state of California needs someone
on their board in the health position who truly appreciates the
multi-dimensional aspects of today’s physical, chemical and
biological insults and their impacts on its citizens,” Cole stated.
