To protect children from accidental lead ingestion, the
French proposal would prohibit the production and sale of jewelry that has a lead migration rate of 0.09 micrograms per
square centimeter per hour (µg/cm²/hr).
A temporary ban on the sale of goods containing DMFu has
been in place in the EU since March 2009. The French proposal
would make the ban permanent. DMFu is used to protect furniture, clothing and other items from mold during storage.
The European Chemicals Agency is accepting comments on
the proposals through December 2010. A final decision on the
proposals is expected in June 2011.

EPA Seeks Employee Participation in Chemical
Safety Inspections
EPA recently released interim guidance that would allow employees and employee representatives to participate in the
Agency’s chemical safety inspections. The Agency will also
request that state and local government agencies adopt the
same procedures under EPA’s Risk Management Program (RMP).
Registering is as easy as A–B–C.
According to EPA, the
new interim guidance
would give their chemical safety process greater
precision and provide
those who work with
hazardous chemicals and
the surrounding communities with better service
and protection.
The EPA RMP attempts to lessen risks associated with the
management, use or
storage of certain hazardous materials in surrounding communities. Under this program, owners and operators of covered facilities must include
facility plans for the prevention and response to chemical accidents in their risk management plans.
EPA anticipates the release of the final guidance on participation of employees and employee representatives in RMP inspections later this year.
