Standards Update
AIHA® Standards Strategy
The AIHA Standards Strategy Development Team recently developed a unified strategy that enables AIHA to engage more effectively in developing and influencing consensus standards. The
strategy enables AIHA to identify important consensus standards issues; track the activities of organizations developing
standards in areas of interest; and determine whether AIHA
should participate in a particular standards development activity.

New and Revised ANSI/AIHA Standards
ANSI/AIHA Z88.7–2010 Revised: Color Coding of Air-Puri-
fying Respirator Canisters, Cartridges and Filters. This
standard applies to the identification of air-purifying respirator
canisters, cartridges and filters used to provide respiratory
protection against gases, vapors or particles. Requirements
apply to canisters, cartridges and any high-efficiency filters,
whether encapsulated or unencapsulated, used as compo-
nents of air-purifying respirators.
ANSI/AIHA Z9.9–2010 New: Portable Ventilation Systems.
This standard discusses portable ventilation equipment and
systems used to reduce, control or prevent exposure to
hazardous atmospheres or airborne substances in the occupa-
tional environment, and for provision of comfort to employees.
New ANSI Standards Subcommittees
BSR-AIHA Z9.12: Design, Operation and Maintenance of
Combustible Dust Collection Systems. This standard will
offer prudent practice regarding analysis of dust control systems for combustible dust hazards, design guidance to mitigate those hazards, and maintenance recommendations.
BSR-AIHA Z9.13: Design, Operation, Testing and Maintenance of Laminar Flow Hoods. This standard will provide
guidelines for design, operation, testing and maintenance of
laminar flow fume hoods (LFFH) that use filtered supply air and
ducted exhaust to protect products inside the hood from external contamination and exhaust hazardous effluents from the
building.
BSR-AIHA Z9.14: Methodology for Certification of a
Biosafety Level 3 (BSL- 3) Lab. The main objective of this
standard would be to develop a methodology for certifying a
BSL- 3. Acceptance criteria would be recommended.
