Scientists React to Interphone Results

The long-awaited results of the European Union’s Interphone study were published in the June issue of the International Journal of Epidemiology. Interphone, the largest project yet undertaken to determine whether cell phone use can lead to brain cancer, involved interviews of 14,000 adult cell phone users in 13 countries from 2000 through 2005.

Christopher Wild, the director of the International Agency
for Research on Cancer (IARC), stated in an IARC press release
that “an increased risk of brain cancer is not established from
the data from Interphone. However, observations at the highest
level of cumulative call time and the changing patterns of
mobile phone use since the period studied by Interphone,
particularly in young people, mean that further investigation
of mobile phone use and brain cancer risk is merited.”
In a post to the NIOSH science blog in July, AIHA® member
Joseph D. Bowman, PhD, CIH, described the difficulties of drawing conclusions from
