The Consultative Air Testing Laboratory
Five new articles about respirator usage will soon be posted to
the NIOSH website at www.cdc.gov/niosh/npptl/default.html.
Written by Richard Metzler and Jonathan Szalajda of the NIOSH
Personal Protective Technology Laboratory, the articles provide
guidance on the selection, use, and maintenance of chemical,
biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) respirators. The articles are summarized below:
“NIOSH approval labels—key information to protect yourself.”
NIOSH issues certificates of approval to a respiratory protective
device that meets applicable requirements. These approval labels
contain important information to assist users in understanding
the respirator, its protections, cautions and limitations, and approved configuration of components. This article explains how
NIOSH approval labels help respirator wearers and summarizes
what wearers should know about NIOSH approval labels.
“What’s special about chemical, biological, radiological, and
nuclear (CBRN) air-purifying respirators (APR)?”
In January 2004, NIOSH implemented a voluntary approval
program for CBRN APR. NIOSH issues certificates of approval,
referred to as a “14G approval,” to CBRN APR as tight-fitting
