Humans’ ability to hear high-pitched sounds underwater that they can’t detect on land is a result of bone conduction, which transmits sound directly to the inner ear, according to a study conducted by the U.S. Navy and presented in May at the annual meeting of the Acoustical Society of America. The research brings to light possible occupational risks for Navy divers using underwater equipment.
