INDUSTRIAL HYGIENISTS

Typical day in these positions:
√ Conduct or lead others in on-site surveys and exposure
assessments to identify and evaluate the degree of exposure
to toxic materials, harmful physical agents, and/or
environmental stressors.
√ Investigate health problems, research and develop approaches,
observe the workplace, collect samples and measurements,
analyze lab results, determine acceptability to exposure,
prepare reports, and recommend solutions.
√ Deal with individuals exposed to a range of physical, chemical, biological, and radiological hazards.
√ Consult and advise others about occupational health issues.
√ Review plans for new or modi;ed processes or facilities.
CHINA LAKE: ;is permanent civilian position is located
at Navy’s premier Research and Development site for air
weaponry. It o;ers the opportunity to perform phase contrast
microscopy and polarized light microscopy for asbestos,
noise dosimetry, ventilation testing, indoor air quality and
hazard assessments. Monitor exposure to various processes
such as chemical synthesis, explosive ordnance, energetics,
quarrying, aviation processes, machining, welding, and more.
Stressors include toxic substances, carcinogenic hazards, and
reproductive hazards such as toxic metals, volatile organic
compounds, bioaerosols, aldehydes, polycyclic aromatic
hydrocarbons, acids, ozone depleting substances various
solvents, isocyanates, oxides of nitrogen, and others.
TWENTYNINE PALMS: ;is term position is located at
Twentynine Palms, the gateway to Joshua Tree National Park,
the Majove Desert, and marine Corps Air Ground combat

Employment is expected to last more than one year, may be
extended, but will not exceed four years.

Requirements
√ Accredited bachelors degree or higher in industrial hygiene
or branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that
included 12 semester hours of chemistry (including organic
chemistry) and 18 semester hours in any combination of
chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental
health, biostatics, biology, physiology, toxicology,
epidemiology, or industrial hygiene.
√ At least one year of full time professional industrial hygienist
experience such as overseeing review of occupational health
standards and inspections of industrial areas; planning and
implementing industrial hygiene surveys; recognizing factors
associated with work operations and ascertaining e;ects on
health and well being of workers.
√ U.S. citizenship is required.
