fatigue training and submit certain work
schedules for their passenger train employees and fatigue mitigation plans to
FRA for approval. The final rule requires
maximum off-duty periods for passenger
train employees, such as locomotive engineers and conductors, the classification
of schedule-specific risks of fatigue
using an approved, scientifically validated and calibrated bio-mathematical
model of human performance and fatigue, and the development of plans that
mitigate fatigue risks before safety can
be compromised.
The rule will become effective Oct. 15.

OSHA App Monitors Heat Index
Workers and employers can now monitor
the heat index at their worksites from
their mobile devices with OSHA’s new
free smartphone application, according
to an Aug. 11 OSHA press release. The
mobile application uses heat index data
from the U.S. National Oceanic and At-
mospheric Administration and the user’s
location to determine what precautions
are necessary to protect workers from
heat-related illnesses.
